Their Love Was Timeless....A Valentine's Day Love Story

Their first date was in the summer of 1952.
"I'm going to marry you someday"
is what he told her on that first date.

On Christmas Eve of that year, he proposed.
She of course said "YES."
11:00 am
April 3, 1953
they both said "I do."

On October 31st 2011
she left this world.
And with her,
she took his heart
and part of his soul.

Today is his first Valentine's Day in 58 years
that he hasn't had her by his side.
That breaks my heart.

Their love was timeless.
An old fashioned love that you
don't see much anymore.
They lived for each other.
They sacrificed so much for their children.
We didn't appreciate it at the time.
We appreciate it now.

Sometimes their love was something
no one else understood.
She wouldn't leave him and he wouldn't leave her.
After the children were raised and had moved on,
they put each other first above all else.
For they knew someday,
each other is all they would have.

Their life together
was like a well orchestrated dance.
They each knew the other's next move
and together, they were complete.

They never had too much,
but always had just enough.
They were old fashioned and out of style.
Or so we thought.
But now we see,
a love like theirs
never goes out of style.
It is a rare gem,
a precious gift.

He never thought she would be the first to go,
honestly,
none of us did.
Ideally, they would have gone together.
Perhaps she is once again preparing a home for them.
Making sure everything is just so, for him.
That was what she did,
made his life perfect.

He has learned to life live a new way.
Not the way he would want,
but the way it must be.
Without even knowing she was doing it,
she was preparing him.
He watched what she did.
And in his own way,
 he is mimicking her ways.

It is all he has ever known.
It is all he will ever know.
We may not understand it,
but we wouldn't want it any other way.

Me?
I pray that Robby and I become them.
I won't get 58 years with my love,
but I hope to make the years we have,
as filled with love as they did.

The times are different,
but the basics are the same.
Love above all else.
No money can buy it,
and nothing can replace it.
The heart must have it.

So today on this day of LOVE,
I give thanks to my mom and dad.
Thanks for showing me what real love is.
Love that endures all.
For better and for worse,
richer & poorer,
sickness & in health,
until death do you part.
And even then,
into eternity.
